Dr. Matthew Brignall is a naturopathic physician with nearly 30 years of experience in patient care. He is newly relocated to a home in West Seattle (thank you to our neighbors at West Seattle Realty), and is currently accepting new patients at West Seattle Natural Medicine.
Dr. Brignall was a clinical instructor for 17 years at Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA, teaching courses in nutrition, medical ethics, and cancer care. He has been active in research and was a member of the first team of naturopathic doctors to write a prestigious Cochrane review. He was instrumental in modernizing the naturopathic education curriculum from strictly alternative medicine training to a comprehensive evidence-based primary care model. He remains a popular speaker at continuing education conferences.
Dr. Brignall worked with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department as part of their pandemic response team from March of 2020 through December of 2022. He trained and helped lead a team of disease investigators to address nursing home COVID-19 outbreaks. He set up and led teams of vaccinators at mass vaccination clinics and provided on-site vaccinations to underserved populations. He was a primary point of communication with the provider community and the public about vaccinations and disease mitigation strategies. He was part of the planning committee tasked with ensuring an equitable vaccine roll-out.
Dr. Brignall is passionate about treating underserved groups in the community. He is experienced working with neurodivergent individuals, as well as treating people living with chronic pain, mental health disorders, and complex medical needs. He has been providing care to LGBTQIA+ individuals since his work at a Ryan White-funded clinic in the mid-90s and has advanced training in gender affirming care. His informal and easy-going style can be a good fit for people who have had bad experiences with prior medical providers.
Dr. Brignall is a graduate of University of Michigan, and still has his Midwest accent. He is a barely competent jazz guitar player, and has a collection of 6000 vinyl LPs, of which 100 are for sale at any given time. He, his fiancée, and his adult disabled daughter are residents of West Seattle, and you’ll probably see them at the grocery store or the farmer’s market.
